Awards

In 2010, he won the ITTF Indian Open.

In June 2011, he won the Brazilian Open without dropping a set, beating Portugal's Marcos Freitas in the final. Three weeks later, he notched up a success on a completely different scale by winning the ITTF South Korea Open, beating Korea's Lee Sang Su 4 sets to 1 in the final. This performance was all the more remarkable given that going into the Round of 16, he was the only European in the competition, up against 15 Asians.

In 2012, he won the final against Timo Boll at the ITTF German Open, coming from 2-0 down to spring a surprise. The following year, in 2013, again at the German Open, he again beat Timo Boll in the semi-finals before losing in the final to China's Fan Zhendong.

In 2014, he regained his German Open title by winning the final against Japan's Jun Mizutani. Dimitrij Ovtcharov lost the final at the ITTF Pro Tour Grand Final to Jun Mizutani.

In 2015, he lost to Vladimir Samsonov in the final of the Qatar Open and to Jun Mizutani in the final of the Austrian Open.

In 2016, at the Polish Open, he lost again in the final to Jun Mizutani.

In 2017, he won the final against Portugal's Marcos Freitas at the Swiss Open. He also won the Indian Open, winning the final against Japan's Harimoto Tomokazu, then aged 13. He won the Chinese Open, beating his compatriot Timo Boll to become the third non-Chinese to win the title, as Ma Long, Fan Zhendong and Xu Xin, the top three in the world, withdrew. He won his fourth Open of the season at the Bulgarian Open.

World Championships

He was runner-up in the team event in 2010 and 2012, and reached the round of 16 in the singles event at the 2013 and 2017 World Table Tennis Championships.

In May 2023, he won the bronze medal in the men's doubles with Patrick Franziska at the World Table Tennis Championships, held in Durban, South Africa from 20 to 28 May5.

European Championships

He was crowned European team champion in 2007, 2008 and 2009 in Stuttgart at the 2009 European Table Tennis Championships, and again in 2010 and 2011 at the European Team Championships.

In 2007, he came third in the men's singles, and won the individual and team titles at the 2013 European Championships in Austria.

He won the European singles title in 2013 in the absence of his compatriot Timo Boll, and again in 2015 in Yekaterinburg.

In 2021 he reached the European Championship final, where he lost only to Timo Boll.
World Cup

On 27 October 2013, he lost to Xu Xin 4-3 in the World Cup semi-final and beat Timo Boll for third place on the same day.

In 2014, he reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup, where he lost out to Timo Boll.

Finally, in 2017, he won his first World Cup against his rival and compatriot Timo Boll in Liège, Belgium.
Olympic Games

Silver medal, Olympic Games At the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, Ovtcharov won the silver medal as part of the German men's team, alongside Timo Boll and Christian Süß.

Bronze medal, Olympic Games At the London 2012 Olympic Games, he won the bronze medal in the singles competition, beating Chuan Chih-Yuan. He had eliminated Michael Maze in the quarter-finals and Chen Weixing in the round of 16, but lost to Zhang Jike, the future Olympic champion, in the semi-finals. Along with his coach Jörg Roßkopf, he is the only German to have won a medal at the Olympic Games in men's singles.

European Top 12, now European Top 16

In February 2012, in Villeurbanne, he won the European Top 12 table tennis competition for the first time, beating Russian Kirill Skachkov 4 sets to nil in the final. In doing so, he succeeded the Greek Kalinikos Kreanga.

He won the European Top 16 in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019.
